The Grapevine
For a bang-on central location and a sea view on a tight budget, you can’t beat The Grapevine, a seafront hostel in The Lanes (with a second premises in the North Laine). Popular with solo backpackers and sports teams, it’s the perfect launch pad for an adventure. The four-bed rooms are the largest.

YHA Brighton
With a bang-on central location opposite the seafront and snazzy premises in the former Royal York hotel, this new branch of the youth hostel association is hard to beat. All 51 rooms are en suite, and some even come with a roll-top bath. Downstairs, posh period features now play off against a movie and karaoke room and funky café-bar.
Old Steine, Brighton, BN1 1NH. 0845 371 9176.

Paskins Town House
This 19-room Victorian townhouse in the East Cliffe Regency area of Kemp Town has been voted vegetarian hotel of the year by the Vegetarian Society (though local sausages and bacon are also on offer on the brilliant organic breakfast menu). Behind the impressive stuccoed façade it’s also one of Brighton’s most environmentally friendly B&Bs. The look, always smart, is a mixture of Edwardian, art deco and modern Japanese.

FAB Guest
A new design-led B&B with 14 bedrooms across four storeys of a Kemp Town townhouse. Bare-bulb lighting and vintage school chairs abound. The top-graded room has floor-to-ceiling windows, a sea-view balcony, and wall art by Danny Sangra.
9 Charlotte Street, Brighton, BN2 1AG. 01273 625505.

Quintessentially Brighton

Hotel Pelirocco
It has been recommended so many times it’s almost in danger of becoming a mainstream cliché. But then they do something like restyling their most popular suite (the one with the mirrored ceiling and dancer’s pole) as The Kraken’s Lair – tentacles and all. Hotel Pelirocco remains Brighton’s best and most genuinely bonkers alternative hotel. Which is why rock stars like Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie (who designed a room) keep coming back.
10 Regency Square, Brighton, BN1 2FG. 01273 327055.
