Literary Cleveland says
On the heels of Lit Cleveland's successful "Learn How Publishing Works" event, we present a talk and Q&A with a successful literary agent and book editor based in Northeast Ohio. Bring your questions and stay to chat afterwards!

This event consists of two short talks:

1) The Agent Quandary: Agents and Queries and Rejections, Oh My!

Navigating the publishing process can be overwhelming for every writer––beginner to advanced. In this presentation, learn the basics of what an agent’s responsibilities are, how to decipher if you need one and if you do, how to tackle the submission process and compose a query letter. As time allows, agent Victoria Selvaggio will also provide information about The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency.

2) The Publishing Process from Acceptance to Print

In this talk, Nicole Boose (Managing Director of Belt Publishing, former Marvel Comics editor) will review how written work goes from initial concept to published piece. Learn about what publishers look for, get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the mechanics of editing and publishing, and discuss the diverse ways that both comics and prose find their way to an audience.

About the presenters:

Business owner turned Associate Agent, Victoria A. Selvaggio comes to JDLA as a prior Regional Advisor for SCBWI: Northern Ohio, with over 9 years of actively working on the executive board. Drawn to the publishing scene first as an author, with her most recent publication in the 2015 Children’s Writer’s and Illustrator’s Market, Vicki’s passion for honing the craft carried over into reading manuscripts for the agency. Currently, she is excited to read compelling manuscripts that will resonate with her long after she’s done.

Nicole Boose is a publishing professional with over a decade of experience working with comics and prose. A former editor at Marvel Comics, Nicole has edited titles including Cable & Deadpool, Iron Man, and Stephen King’s adapted novels. She has also worked extensively with writer Mark Millar, creator of Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Nicole is currently Managing Director at Belt Publishing, a Cleveland-based company specializing in nonfiction about the Rust Belt, and is on the staff of the educational company Comics Experience.
