"Spirits & Synapses" Michael Decker

Why do certain neurological disorders, such as sleepwalking, emerge only during sleep? During the time of Shakespeare, the Royal College of Physicians attributed somnambulism (sleep walking) to severe disturbances of the spirit, sinning, melancholic and diseased minds, agitation of the brain, or the Devil. During Dr. Decker's presentation, he'll try to convince us to rule-out the Devil by describing how neurologic disorders such as epilepsy elicit those symptoms once ascribed to “spiritual possession.” He'll also suggest that the Royal College of Physician's suggestion of severe disturbances of the spirit, sinning, melancholic and diseased minds, or agitation of the brain may still be valid.
