With the southern reaches of Savska cesta fast emerging as one of inner-city Zagreb’s prime drinking locations, it’s hearting to know that there are the makings of a good food revolution in this part of Zagreb too. The bright, colorful and spacious Day Café concentrates on the kind of healthy global fare that mainstream Croatian restaurants frequently avoid: Mexico and the Far East are the main areas of inspiration, with quesadillas, tortilla wraps and wok-fried dishes (with either rice or noodles) taking up the bulk of the menu. There’s a breakfast menu (served until 10.30am) that runs the gamut from healthy muesli to robust Full English, and an innovative drinks menu that includes fresh juices, and acai and hemp smoothies. The only difficulty is trying to find it: despite the address it’s actually behind Savska cesta, accessed from an anonymous-looking alley that runs parallel to the railway tracks to the west.
