During the month of April, local poets visit the downtown
Central Library for a reading followed by a question and
answer session. You are invited to join us to hear work from
Edyka Chilomé and R. Flowers Rivera.

Edyka Chilomé is a Woman of Color writer, spoken word poet, Hip Hop MC, and spiritual activist of diasporic indigenous descent. She holds a B.A. in social and political philosophy with an emphasis in social justice from Loyola University Chicago and a M.A. in Women's Studies from Texas Women's University where she focused her research on performance studies and what she calls spiritual [art]ivism. Edyka has been invited to share her spoken word poetry and speak on social justice issues around the country including The Dallas Museum of Art, The Prindle Institute for Ethics, Boston University School of Theology, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, The General Commission on the Status and Role of Women, The Texas Democratic Convention, TEDx, and National Public Radio. In 2013 Edyka was a founding member and co-host of DFW's first and only poetry radio show The Free Word on Deep Ellum on Air. She has recently published her first collection of poetry entitled She Speaks | Poetry.

Celebrated poet R. Flowers Rivera has published two award-winning books of poetry: Troubling Accents (July, 2013) and Heathen (February, 2015). A native of Mississippi and current resident of Texas, Rivera earned her PhD in English at Binghamton University, specializing in African-American literature and creative writing. For Heathen, Rivera was named recipient of the prestigious 2015 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award as selected by acclaimed poet and literary activist E. Ethelbert Miller.
