Betsy and Gillian met in the summer of 1987 on a raft trip down the Arkansas River. But nothing really happened between them until months later when they saw each other again at a dance they both were attending. Betsy and Gillian legally married in California but felt odd when they came back to Colorado where it wasn’t legal.
Regardless of the situation, they both agree how emotional and powerful it was for both of them to be married to one another. When asked what has kept them engaged, Betsy clearly stated they appreciate each other. Their interests are usually not the same and are very divergent with similar values. They share ideas, joys and sorrow that keep them together. Gillian explained their different interests have also strengthened their relationship. It’s also about treating each other with good will.
Betsy and Gillian began participating in The Center’s activities several years ago especially the Gay & Grey in the West group. When Betsy and Gillian began to attend the Telling Your Story group they didn’t know what to expect especially when the majority of those attending were men. It didn’t take long for more women to attend. Both have found it not only cathartic or therapeutic but it has caused them to think about their lives and how one can live their lives in some other role. Betsy states “It’s been quite powerful to know you can turn your life around and put things into perspective.” Over the past year, Betsy and Gillian remain involved with the Telling Your Story group. Both served on the SAGE advisory committee and have taken the lead in organizing the Women’s Salon at The Center.
This year, The Center celebrates its 40th Anniversary. In honor of this celebration, we would like to begin a tradition in which the SAGE of the Rockies program will honor an individual(s) 50+ who has impacted or inspired others in the LGBT community.
We are excited to announce Betsy McConnell and Gillian Edwards as this year’s Elders of Pride 2016. Congratulations to both of you for your leadership and dedication in improving the lives of others today and in years to follow.
