Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad…Wait, What Do They Do Again? Demystifying the Role of the Attorney General’s Office in Colorado’s Juvenile Cases

Whether you are a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, county attorney, GAL, or respondent parent counsel, chances are that at some point over the life of your cases you hear that the Attorney General’s Office has been involved. Questions that often follow are “why?!?” or “how?!?” We’re here to answer those questions. The Human Services Unit of the Attorney General’s Office represents the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS). The second largest state agency, CDHS is responsible for oversight of child protection services and running the state’s youth corrections facilities. As a result, the issues handled by attorneys of the Human Services Unit range from subpoenas in juvenile delinquency matters to administrative prosecution of child abuse cases. AAGs Tanja Wheeler and Jessica Perrill will give an overview of who the Unit advises, what the AG’s role is, who the AGs assist, and what actions are taken by the AGs in the routine juvenile cases they’re involved in.
