The Sick Man of Europe is a five part series of
installations by Jerusalem–born artist Dor Guez
reflecting on the military history of the Middle East by
examining the creative practices of individual soldiers.
The series title, first used to describe the Ottoman
Empire, has since been applied to nearly every
country in Europe and the Middle East. The Architect
tells the story of Kemal P., an architecture student
recruited into the Turkish army on the eve of World
War II. Through video, photographs, and artifacts from
the soldier’s life we observe the Ottoman Empire
transform into the Republic of Turkey and learn how
written history often clashes with the personal stories
of individuals.

Dor Guez is an artist and a scholar whose work
has been the subject of over 25 solo exhibitions
worldwide, including the Institute of Contemporary Art
in London earlier this year. Guez lives in Jaffa, Israel
and serves as Head of the Photography Department at
the Bezalel School of Art and Design, Jerusalem.
The Sick Man of Europe exhibition has been organized
by MOCAD and is curated by Chelsea Haines.
The Sick Man of Europe is made possible by Artis.
