About Stupor:
For over 20 years, Steve Hughes has dredged the murk of Detroit and Hamtramck’s amazing bars, extracting stories along the way and publishing them in his zine Stupor. He collaborates with an artist on each issue who accomplishes all the visual aspects. The new full color issue, TURNING BLUE, is partially funded by a grant from the Knight Foundation. The Stupor Sound Experience is a broken experiment in sound. Hughes weaves sticks through the strings of his guitar. He hits various parts of its body with drumsticks, then scrapes the frets with drywall knives. Backed by Chris Peters on guitar and Nick Cicchetti on pedals, the three lay out a ragged din of noise that emphasizes the rhythmic structure of Hughes’s stories. The sound is ambient and soaring then harsh with sudden cathartic surges. Together they embrace confusion. They build toward cataclysm. Ultimately, T.S.S.E. provides a new visceral framework for the material that makes Stupor.
