A music and film premiere featuring “Within Our Gates” (1920) by Oscar Micheaux, accompanied by William Hooker on drums and percussion.

In this early silent film from pioneering director Oscar Micheaux, kindly Sylvia Landry (Flo Clements) takes a fundraising trip to Boston in hopes of collecting $5,000 to keep a Southern school for impoverished black children open to the public. She then meets the warmhearted Dr. Vivian (William Smith), who falls in love with Sylvia and travels with her back to the South. There, Dr. Vivian learns about Sylvia's shocking, tragic past and realizes that racism has changed her life forever.

=================================================
William Hooker has been working with music and film for the past twelve years. Most recently he has been performing with the films of Oscar Micheaux at the Courtesane Festival in Ghent, Belgium, the American Film Institute in Silver Springs, Maryland and at Lincoln Center in New York City. He has also performed with films of Stan Brakhage and 3D animated features.

Oscar Micheaux (January 2, 1884 – March 25, 1951) was an American author, film director and independent producer of more than 44 films. Although the short-lived Micheaux Book & Film Company produced some films, he is regarded as the first major African-American feature filmmaker, the most successful African-American filmmaker of the first half of the twentieth century and the most prominent producer of race films. He produced both silent films and "talkies" after the industry changed to incorporate speaking actors.
