Join us for this fresh, enticing series that brings together some of the most engaging thinkers and doers from throughout Detroit as they not only showcase their work, but the stories that drive them and their processes as creators and Detroiters.


Stephen Henderson is editorial page editor for the Free Press. His column appears on Sundays in the newspaper and at FreepOpinion.com.

A Detroit native, he is a graduate of University of Detroit High School and the University of Michigan.

He has been a reporter, editorial writer and editor for the Free Press, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, the Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun. Before returning to Detroit in 1997, he spent four years covering the U.S. Supreme Court for the Knight Ridder (now McClatchy) Washington Bureau.

Joel Fluent Greene is a Detroit based poet, author and promoter. He was the long running host at Detroit’s iconic, Cafe Mahogany poetry nights. As a performance poet and host, Fluent has shared the stage with acts and personalities as diverse as The Roots, Pharrell Williams, The Last Poets, Talib Kweli, Ledisi, Big Sean, Saul Williams, and many more. He also conducts outreach work and has taught and hosted workshops in schools throughout the Detroit area.

In 2012, Greene was honored with the prestigious Spirit of Detroit Award for his many years of commitment and leadership. Currently, Joel Fluent Greene runs Joel Fluent Greene Presents, a successful event promotions company, and in March released his first collection of poetry, WAXING/waning.


The "Write Down Detroit" series is based in MOCAD*, takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the event starts promptly at 7pm.
