Street Level Photoworks

Free-to-visit photography gallery in Merchant City, hosting work by photographers from around the world

A main tenant of the Trongate 103 facility, which is one of the key hubs for Glasgow’s creative community, Street Level Photoworks closely followed its long-standing neighbour Glasgow Print Studio in setting-up here in 1989. In 2014, SLP celebrated a quarter-century of offering the public the means to make and engage with photography and lens-based media, while supporting and exhibiting great photographers from Scotland and further afield.

A non-profit organisation supported by Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council, Street Level prides itself on being a place ‘embedded locally and connected internationally’. Its educational and outreach projects maintain an ongoing engagement with members of the Glasgow public of all ages. Partnerships with a network of other venues around Scotland and the rest of the world, for whom they provide exhibitions, offer regular snapshots of great photography from both near and far.

Well-received recent exhibitions at Street Level have included a major retrospective of German post-war photographer Helga Paris (its only British showing), ‘What Presence! The Rock Photography of Harry Papadopoulos’ (featuring shots of iconic musicians taken between 1978 and 1984, from Orange Juice and Josef K to The Clash), and a retrospective of the photographic works of Scots documentary filmmaker David Peat.

The spacious, white-walled, high-ceilinged gallery can be accessed from either King Street or Argyll Street, allowing contrasting perspectives. All of the exhibitions here are free, and like the other many other quality galleries and artist studios in Trongate 103 and the surrounding Merchant City area, Street Level is best enjoyed in combination with a visit to some if its neighbours.
