I M Teppanyaki

To some, teppanyaki may conjure up images of acrobatically tossed fried rice and onion volcanoes, where dinner was a spectacle to behold. But don’t expect those types of gimmicks at I M Teppanyaki. The restaurant is courtesy of Lawrence Mok, former executive chef at Inakaya Hong Kong. The cosy Tai Hang venue houses two massive grill tables and seats a maximum of 20 people. All chefs at I M Teppanyaki are classically trained in Japan, and it shows with their dexterity at the grill as well as their not-too-intrusive conversational skills with diners.

Chef Mok fires it up

There are two set menus available, as well as a la carte items. We decide to go all out with Mok’s Menu ($1,280), featuring decadent items such as foie gras and lobster. All food products are ordered daily according to the bookings for the night, ensuring fresh and top-notch dishes for patrons. Our trio of appetisers arrive with a selection of vegetables, a creamy cooked clam and a thumb-sized scampi in tangy soy sauce. This place is serious about using the best ingredients for the entire service – and we aren’t disappointed by anything on the menu. The grilled scallop is perfectly charred; simmering on the grill is the sauce infused in the scallop’s own shell that consists of reduced sake, butter and a dash of almond syrup, which adds a note of toasty goodness.

Foie gras

The foie gras, proudly sourced from France, is served with a small selection of fresh and tarty fruit that enhances the flavour while trimming the richness of the dish. We particularly enjoy the fig and the blueberry combinations. Luscious lobster is served in its own fat, blended into soft cream and then curdled with butter on the grill – a heavenly combination that can’t be beat.

There aren’t any high-flying acrobatic dishes at I M Teppanyaki; chef Mok lets the food speak for itself, without a tacky, outdated show. We’ll be back for more – as soon as we finish digesting this praise-worthy eight-course meal.
