Leonard Bernstein’s classic West Side Story immediately conjures up images of no-good West Side boys, flailing skirts and Puerto Ricans doing the mambo. Get ready for a love story that also covers some hard-hitting themes hitting the big screen, complete with all the toe-tapping music and dance numbers – but with a live orchestra too. The acclaimed film version of the Broadway hit is aired at this show while the HK Phil orchestra, conducted by Jayce Ogren, performs the entire soundtrack right in front of you. The Broadway musical debuted in 1957 but this feature film, co-directed by the musical’s choreographer Jerome Robbins and starring Natalie Wood and George Chakiris, charts the rivalry between two gangs in the Upper West Side in the 1950s: the New York native Jet, and the Puerto Rican immigrant Sharks.
