Anvil Bar & Refuge says
Columbus brought sugar cane from Spain’s Canary Islands and sherry from Spain to what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic on his 1492 voyage. Decades later, colonialists began planting it throughout the region, relying on imported slave labor for farming. This Transatlatinc Slave Trade was accelerated by the lack of local manpower resulting from Columbus’ brutal tactics that killed over a million indigenous people. Rum itself would first appear as a commodity a hundred years later. Bars are never the best place for political commentary, but we feel it is dispicable that we honor this horrible man who raped and murdered so many with a national holiday. We plan to bring awareness about this issue forward every year until Columbus Day is no more.

We are offering discounted rum and classic rum cocktails from the countries that Columbus visited. Columbus was also the first person to bring fortified wine, most likely Sherry, to the area. So we will be offering up 6 Break-Even Bottles of rare Sherry as well.
