The Hay Merchant says
We all love coffee beers. Most of them are just beer blended with coffee, and the coffee isn't part of the actual production process. We partnered with Blacksmith and Clown Shoes for an experiment. Can we make coffee part of the brewing process and, at the same time, maintain the coffee's integrity during the aging process?

Clown Shoes is known for brewing beers unique to individual states. In the past, they've released a Texas-only beer called Fistful of Unidragon, a barrel-aged version of their popular The Good, The Bad & The Unidragon. Now, we're working with Clown Shoes and Blacksmith on a special version of Fistful of Unidragon - called Hephaestus (Blacksmith of the Gods) - featuring espresso from Blacksmith.

This process included pulling one thousand shots of espresso by hand, high pressure pasteurization and a lot of Fed Ex fees.

When Clown Shoes was prepping the beer for the barrel, they pulled a few casks off, and Hay Merchant has a very limited amount of this un-aged espresso-blended beer. One keg will be tapped on Sunday, December 20 at 7pm, and the other will be reserved for Hay Merchant's fourth anniversary party in February.

Why tap the beer on a Sunday at 7pm? Because, according to David, that's when coffee people drink beer.
