Washington Avenue Arts District says
Join us for a day of neighborhood beautification, public art, community partnership and open studios with the largest group of working artists in Texas!

Day In The District will kick off at 9am with a beautification and public art volunteer opportunity sponsored by The Dow Chemical Co. in partnership with Keep Houston Beautiful (a local branch of Keep America Beautiful) and the First Ward. The public is invited to join over two hundred Dow employees from 9am-12pm as they create a subtle public art installation and undertake a clean up of Crockett Elementary.

The morning session will begin at 9am at Spring Street Studios – 1824 Spring St. with the colorful painting of five hundred wood bollards that line the bike trail that runs from Sawyer St. to Holly St. in Houston’s historic First Ward neighborhood. The painting of the bollards is made possible through a Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) Adopt-A-Trail program agreement between the First Ward Civic Council (FWCC) and HPARD. FWCC’s Adoption of this area will benefit the neighborhood through the groups continued maintenance and upkeep of the bollards in the approved paint format and de-littering of the trail area.

Paint teams will assemble at Spring Street, gather their paint supplies and complete painting a block of bollards. Volunteers will also ascend on Crockett Elementary to undertake a light cleanup of the property gardens and pond. In the Spring Street parking lot, volunteers will begin assembling “Moveable Furniture” including – benches, performance platforms and art walls all designed by Asakura Robinson that will be housed in different locations throughout the district for events and moveable infrastructure.

Then join us in the afternoon and early evening for the Spring Biannual Art Opening at Winter Street Studios, Spring Street Studios and@Silver Street Houston. Over 250 artists will open their doors from 3pm-9pm and invite the public inside to view new work, shop and become collectors. A variety of art works will be showcased during the event - paintings, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, glass, mosaic, photography, mixed media, and jewelry. Visitors will be treated to museum quality artists, many of them represented by local and nationwide galleries.

During the event, the studios will also be hosting a Charity 12x12 exhibition benefiting the @Memorial Park Conservancy. Artists in all three buildings have donated their time to create a special 12x12 square piece that will sell for $100 with all proceeds benefiting the conservancy. The opening is free and guests will be treated to complimentary valet, light bites and beverages. Pedi-cab shuttles between all three buildings will also be available.
