Anvil Bar & Refuge says
Last fall, owner Bobby Heugel & general manager Terry Williams travelled to Japan. They spent two weeks traveling through five cities in Japan, visiting cocktail bars and Japanese whisky distilleries. When they returned, they hosted a Lessons from Japan event, where they turned Anvil into a Japanese cocktail bar, complete with bowties, suspenders, and plenty of Japanese Highballs.

It was no surprise that assistant general manager Jessey Qi, a Scotch lover, chose Scotland for his trip. Jessey and Bobby spent two weeks visiting 50 distilleries throughout the UK and Ireland (47 were Scotch distilleries). As always, the customers are the beneficiaries. “When I’m pouring you a Scotch, I can tell you what the distillery looks like,” said Jessey. “I can tell you how many people work there, how long they’ve worked there and how many sheep are grazing in their grass. I know where they’re sourcing their water, how they’re aging their barrels, where they’re getting the grain and where they’re sending it to age. Travel—and the knowledge gained in the process—is invaluable.”

On Sunday, September 25, the team at Anvil, led by Jessey and Terry, will host Lessons from Scotland, featuring spirits from his favorite distilleries.

Here’s how it works. The team takes reservations for one hour time slots at the following times: 4pm, 5:30pm, 7pm, 8:30pm and 10pm. For $60, guests receive six pours of single malt scotch and one Scotland-inspired cocktail. They can also purchase an upgrade ticket for $90, where two of the pours are replaced with rarer selections. Reservations must be made at Anvil and purchased in advance.
