Real Talk:
"What is an artist talk?"

Tuesday, April 14, 7:00 - 8:30pm

Hello Project is pleased to present the second in a new series of Real Talks featuring real critical discussion.

In the gallery setting, artist talks are often seen as a necessary point of contact between artist and collector, but rarely do we ask ourselves what purpose they serve, where they originated, or why they exist at all. Overseeing artist talks at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Daniel Atkinson has gained an intimate familiarity with their range. Presenting on the history and meaning of artist talks, he will explore different methods and approaches artists have taken in speaking about their work that push away from the traditional, oversimplified, chronological narratives many expect. Conceived as a tool kit both to understand and generate new modes of presentation, the talk will seek to make the familiar form strangely unfamiliar.

Daniel Atkinson received his B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota and an M.A. in Arts Education from New York University. While in New York City he was a freelance educator, serving in a range of positions in arts institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, and Dia:Beacon. He also worked in public schools teaching art throughout the five boroughs. After leaving New York City he also freelanced in Chicago, teaching and speaking on education at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development, and again in a public school. He is currently the Education and Public Programs Manager at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
