Asia Society Texas Center presents a mid-summer family film screening of one of the earliest U.S.-created animated features with a focus on China. Based on the legendary female warrior Hua Mulan, this adaptation from Disney tells the story of a young maiden taking her father’s place in battle and becoming one of China’s greatest heroines. Well received by critics, this film also garnered Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Original Score. Following the screening, visitors will create dragons inspired by the character of Mushu from the film.

About the film

In order to preserve her family’s honor and protect her father, young Mulan disguises herself as a soldier and enters into battle against the invading Huns. Her ancestors attempt to dissuade her by sending a disgraced dragon, Mushu, which becomes her comedic companion. Additionally aided by a cricket named Cri-Kee, her horse Kahn, and the courageous Captain Li Shang, she must save the Imperial City, while maintaining her secret.
