Summer Of Shakespeare: The Sonnets says
Shakespeare may have made his name in plays, but the man always considered himself a poet. He popularized the Elizabethan style of sonnet, so much so that the form is commonly remembered as a “Shakespearean sonnet.” His plays are full of poetic devices, structure, and meter, and also amazing mixes of verses and prose. In addition to his 154 sonnets, Shakespeare authored three epic poems—and his own grave marker. He was like that.

Join us tonight for to hear some of his best-loved sonnets, as well as incredible moments of poetry from the plays, read by members of the Houston Shakespeare Festival. Spanning the spectrum from deeply romantic to bitingly satiric, these fourteen-line poems are perfect examples of verse and poetics in miniature. Spoken aloud, they live and breathe as much as—or even more than—your typical dramatic writing. Bring your favorite person for a date night, come with your favorite literary-minded friends, or come on your own, because you won’t want to miss this fantastic experience of language and poetry.
