Have you ever noticed when you are excited how your breathing quickens or how much slower it becomes when you are feeling blue or shallow when you are frightened or anxious? From the time we take our first breath we don’t have to think much about breathing, and most of us seldom do. We are mostly unaware of these subtle changes in our breathing until we bring our attention to it. Did you know that breathing always deepens with relaxation, pleasure, sleep and Ecstatic Dancing? Our breathing is directly linked to our states of being.
Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist says, ““Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”

In The Dance my breath is my anchor, my guide. Every time I find myself lost in a turbulent sea of thoughts or catch myself stuck on an emotional wave, bringing my attention to my breath, noticing its quality, anchors me back into my body. I can become present in the moment. I can ride the waves of each breath and stay present to the nuances of the music’s rhythmic pulse as it resonate through me. Consciously breathing, I am no longer being breathed and the music dances me.

Feel the deep pleasure that can be experienced at the end of the dance, like the end of a long exhale, when the descending wave of our breath fills the pelvis and with a delicious sensation. Experience how the process of our breathing and dancing is much more than a physical function!
