Time Out says

Built as a Byzantine church in the 11th century by the mother-in-law of Alexius I Comnenus, then converted into a mosque in the 16th century, the Chora was re-appropriated for a museum in 1958. Its walls and ceilings are adorned by some of the world’s finest mosaics and frescoes.
