Nestling below the castle, far from both nightlife and traffic, this turreted guesthouse offers simple lodgings with five-star panoramas. From a cobbled street high above the Baixa, you climb further up a spiral staircase to a precipitous patio dotted with sunshades. Inside, the rooms are clean but spartan; most share bathrooms. Wi-Fi is free but patchy. At the top of another spiral stairway is an octagonal tower with rickety seats where you can admire the view on three sides.
Try to get Room 12 in the northern corner of the pensão if you want to feel really on top of the world. Cold soft drinks and crisps are on sale at reception, and there’s a kitchen with fridge and microwave for guests’ use.
