Jane Bown (1925-2014) went by the mantra that ‘photographers should neither be seen nor heard’ but the late Observer photographer used her unassuming personality and unobtrusive style to get close to some of the biggest names and events of the twentieth century. Two hundred of her best shots are brought together in a new monograph, including portraits of the Queen, The Beatles and Björk. You'll also see ace examples of her lesser-known street photography, including images of London, its inhabitants and visitors picked from Bown's stellar six-decade career.

‘Jane Bown: A Lifetime of Looking’ is published by Faber & Faber.
