Few Bristol pubs can boast as long and distinguished a history as The Coronation Tap. There’s been a boozer on its Sion Place site since the 18th century, meaning that ‘The Cori’ predates the nearby Clifton Suspension Bridge.
As you’d expect from something so steeped in Bristol folklore, there’s a homely, old-fashioned feel to the place, and you’re arguably not a true Bristolian until you’ve sampled the venue’s unique, super-strength cider, Exhibition (it’s so potent, it’s only ever served in half-pint measures).
While you’ll find a solid selection of real ales, lagers and wines, it’s the pub’s constantly changing cider range that stands out. Whether you’re after draught scrumpy, obscure bottled brands or even a mulled cider (the perfect winter warmer, regardless of whether it’s Christmas), the Coronation Tap has it covered. They even run regular cider-tasting nights, though the friendly staff will make recommendations if you’re new to the West Country’s favourite tipple.
The Cori’s other big draw – aside from its friendly, relaxed atmosphere and community feel, of course – is its packed live music schedule. There are jazz, funk, soul and blues bands most Thursdays and Sundays, with a few student-friendly Monday sessions thrown in to boot. Quite a few well-known faces have played the Cori during their early days, so it’s always worth checking out their gig listings to see if you can spot some future stars.
