Housed in a former art gallery and shop, this inappropriately named hangout – it’s actually right on Broadway Market – has won a loyal following since it opened at the end of 2008.
The owners have said that it’s modelled on a now-defunct bar in New York’s East Village, and you can kind of see what they mean without having been there. Certainly, the menu’s mix of notable beers (Brooklyn on tap, along with a number of other excellent bottled American imports) with worthwhile cocktails (rooted in tradition, but modified for the modern drinker) is unusual for the UK but pretty common across the ocean.
The vibe is low-key, but atmosphere develops easily in the dimly lit, L-shaped room as the place fills, which it does most evenings. Events across the main bar and the downstairs room include regular gigs and a knitting club.

After standing at the bar for ten minutes they rang the bell for last orders. I ordered 2 beers and a cocktail. The barman handed me 2 beers and said £8. I asked about the cocktail and he said 'Ah you don't want it' and then mumbled something about not having it. I then said okay I'll have another cocktail from the specials board. He then really aggressively said "Here's a tip, DON'T ORDER COCKTAILS FOR LAST ORDERS". They then rang the last orders bell again 5 minutes later, so he clearly just wasn't arsed. He also charged me £10 for the cocktail, even though it said £7.50 on the board. All of the staff had a very passive aggressive air about them. Total rip off, won't be going back.
I really like this place. It gets mentally busy and pretty crammed but there's always somebody to chat to and make friends with. Really like their draught beer too. Recommended.
I visit here once a week or so and although the selection of beers and cocktails are impressive unfortunately the service and the quality of the food and cocktails is a bit hit and miss. Some nights it is spot on but all too often when it gets even a little bit busy the quality of the food and drinks slips. £8 for a cocktail is pretty fair, but don't use watery half-melted ice to make them and don't simply throw a few spirits together half-arsed like just because there are a few people waiting.
Really like this place when it's not too busy. Staff are always really friendly. It's not cheap (although bottled beers aren't bad) but is the only place on Broadway Market that does real cocktails.
Disgusting service. The folk who run the bar are a bunch of arrogant posers . Once cocktails use to be good, now they don't even bother anymore, they are only worried about £££. Classical example of a place that started well and now has sold his soul. Don't go.
Awful service, would not recommend to anyone! My mate booked a table for her birthday several months in advance and paid a £50 deposit. We turned up at 8 (the time of the booking) to be told "oops we've double booked you" no effort was made to accommodate us or compensate us for the massive inconvenience. We later found out that the group sat at our table were friends of the manager.Talking to others in the bar it was clear that this was not the first time! I would never go back to Off Broadway after the way they treated us! DO NOT BOOK TO COME HERE!
Yeah, it not cheap, shot what is these days is Hackney. I go to weathersp**n if I'm broke, but can only take so much of that till i need to be stimulated with some passion and proper cocktails. Off Broadway, is a great hang out during the week, the barmen are a bit out of their minds, but that is a good thing, at least they are fun to chat with. I think the Mexican food is great and total authentic. Plus I get a nice warm feeling with two of their cocktails. This is an American bar for sure, it almost makes me want to tip them - almost ;)
