Prague

With its dim lighting, ghostly atmosphere and woodcut artwork, entering Prague is a little like walking into a Kafka novel. Although it’s on the bar vortex where Kingsland Road meets Old Street, it’s often overlooked – a shame, as it’s pretty good.

The menu tucked into empty bottles placed on each tabletop lists 30-plus cocktails (around £7), but many drinkers are here for the Czech beers, among them the rarely found Budvar Dark on tap, and for cheap Czech-influenced snacks such as roll mops, marinated cheese and pickled sausage.

The presence here of the St Vitus Gallery adds a weird, creative touch to some of the artwork; the place is filled with paintings and illustrations by local artists.
