The Canadian cabaret producer celebrates a decade of decadence

In 2002, Canadian Mark Henderson hit upon a new name and a new business when he began producing burlesque shows as Chaz Royal. He’s been one of the international scene’s leading showmakers ever since, with events ranging from London Burlesque Week to this year’s Edinburgh run of ‘Sexy Circus Sideshow’. Ahead of his ten-year anniversary shows at Bush Hall, Ben Walters asked Chaz to plunder his scrapbook for some key moments in his journey…

  • World Burlesque Games, 2012

    ‘From the start of my burlesque career, I had always joked that some day I would put on the “Burlesque Olympics”. Before LBW 2011 was even over, plans for the 2012 World Burlesque Games were underway – it only seemed fitting since the real Olympics were coming to London. I set out to acknowledge and award as many genres as possible, female and male, UK and international. I wanted to give everyone a chance at winning a title.

    ‘Eliza Delite, a hopeful from Leicester with less then two years’ experience, took the title to thunderous applause at the Best British Female competition. Her tribute to the Virgin Mary mesmerised spectators and showed other participants it’s anyone’s game. Eliza’s performing on Friday.’
