Brixton clubs

Brixton club Phonox looks to be kind of a big deal for south London nightlife, and in fact London clubbing as a whole. After the team behind acclaimed nightspots including XOYO, The Nest, the Old Queen's Head and the Blues Kitchen franchises purchased the site of former Brixton club Plan B when it shut down, they wasted little time in transforming it into Phonox. The club has a similar feel to both XOYO and the Nest: a sleek, dark dance cavern with plenty of space for dancing, and the programming leans very much towards the leftfield side of dance music – don't expect cheesy '80s nights here, it's quality, underground house, techno, disco and bass all the way. HAAI is the permanent resident DJ, and will curate Saturday nights at Phonox. He'll also be bringing in guest DJs, all of whom will be unannounced, but don't worry, you're in safe hands with James's on-point tastes. Elsewhere, Friday nights will feature acclaimed selectors playing all-night-long or back-to-back sets, from top names like Gilles Peterson, Julio Bashmore, DJ Sneak, The Bug and Horse Meat Disco leading the way. Brixton's multi-floored bar and club the Prince of Wales serves many functions, but its club space and terrace are the jewel in its musical crown. The terrace is arguably the best of any club in London, and summer months see parties (led by top crews like Slide and Get Diverted and Brixton Boogaloo) take place way up high. There's a loose funk, house, soul, disco and hip hop ethos to PoW's programming, and you'll find selectors like Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay and Joey Negro spinning party jams on any given weekend. Alongside that, various house and techno legends also make appearances, playing on both the terrace and the inside section of the club, making PoW a truly versatile venue.

This Brixton restaurant, bar and live music venue helps brings the party vibe to Coldharbour Lane. Every Friday and Saturday night sees DJs on rotation, with everything from deep house and hip hop to boogie, funk, soul and ska on the playlist. Market House invites various different food stalls and chefs to take over the kitchen - it's the turn of Bhangra Burgers at the moment. Expect masala fish and chips and tandoori chicken and chips alongside Bombay potato burgers, tandoori chicken burgers and a lamb jalfrezi burger - served with spiced apple and pear chutney, chilli pickle and raita. The drinks list ranges from house cocktails such as the Monkey Mambo (Monkey Shoulder whiskey, Remi Martin VSOP, Cointreau, elderflower cordial, fresh fig and lemon) to jugs of Pimms and a wine list with 17 available by the glass. 

The Fridge was a legendary rave paradise in the early ’90s, a stomping ground for the rare groove scene, funky jazz-house and, later, hard dance and psy-trance beats. In 2011, however, the converted cinema underwent a £1-million refit, with new management in place, and was reborn as Electric Brixton, with a mix of club nights focused on everything from reggaeton to disco and house, and live music from some of the UK’s hottest up-and-coming artists.
