Hofesh Shechter – ‘Political Mother’
Shechter’s shows are pitched somewhere between cinematic immersion and the noisy bombast of a rock gig, and it’s powerful stuff. This show at Sadler’s Wells had live guitars and drums, folk-inflected muscular movement in rolling phrases, flashes of wit, brooding atmosphere, shamelessly dramatic lighting and characteristic themes of power, control and dictatorship. Then there was that amazing coda where he rewinds the action of the whole show. A bit gimmicky maybe, but a little bit genius too.
