Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Documentary about speed record-setting cyclist Graeme Obree.

You might not have heard of the Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree. Think of him as the anti-Lance Armstrong. In 1993 he broke the world hour record on a bike he built himself for less than a hundred quid. But instead of enjoying a glittering career, Obree was frozen out of professional cycling for misconduct – which in the mid-’90s meant refusing to dope.

This low-key doc follows Obree’s recent attempt, aged 47, to break the human land-speed record in Nevada on a crazy-looking machine he built with bits of old rollerblades and saucepans. An eccentric genius, Obree is a joy to watch, funny, obsessive and complex; he talks with heartfelt honesty about his struggles with depression and coming out as gay in 2011.
