Jeffries' second film treats that most treacherous of subjects: the emotional deprivations of childhood. Reginald Rose's cliché-oriented script notwithstanding, Jeffries emerges successful from the project, neither wallowing in melodrama nor seeking social significance where none is to be found. Scott Jacoby is masterful as the emotionally disturbed 12-year-old caught between two worlds, California and London, and helped by an odd collection of friends.
