Before Winter Comes

Towards the end of WWII, Major Niven has the difficult task of deciding the fate of displaced persons: send them to the Free World, or to Russia? His job is made rather easier when co-star Topol arrives, a valued linguist who claims to be a Yugoslav refugee but is in fact a Russian deserter. Scripted by Andrew Sinclair from a short story by Frederick L Keefe, it's impeccably humanistic, unusually contrived and incredibly dull. It should have been a comedy or a musical.
