Bond: then and now

Does the latest film 'Skyfall' refresh or rehash the James Bond franchise?

Judging from the trailer for his latest adventure ‘Skyfall’, James Bond is up to his old tricks again. Adam Lee Davies takes an in-depth look, and comes up with ten reasons why Bond fans are going to feel right at home…

  • In the ‘Skyfall’ trailer...
There’s the somewhat iffy title ‘Skyfall’.

    It’s a bit like the title of…
Die Another Day’, ‘Never Say Never Again’ (1983), ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ or ‘Licence to Kill’ (1989) in that it’s wholly invented by the film’s producers, with no relation to Bond author Ian Fleming. And all of those films were fairly terrible.

    New twist or tired rehash?
GoldenEye’ (1995) and – at a push – ‘The World Is Not Enough’ were both very good films, and while neither bore the titles of original Bond adventures, both can claim vague links to Fleming. ‘Skyfall’ cannot. Let’s hope it bucks the trend.
