Free Birds

Reggie (Owen Wilson) is the smartest gobbler in his flock. He knows his fellow turkeys are being fattened up for human consumption come Thanksgiving in November, though his dimwitted brethren are happily ignorant. Fortunately, fate puts our hero in the path of a muscular birdbrain (Woody Harrelson) with a magic doorknob that leads the duo to a time machine, which takes them back to the very first Thanksgiving where they proceed to… You might as well just make up the rest yourself; it will prove more satisfying than sitting through this laugh-free stab at an animated classic for the US ‘holiday season’. The target audience may be the kids who’ll stare goggle-eyed at any low-rent Pixar knockoff, but the purported humour and reliance on nonsensical plot twists are pure stoner. To call this a turkey would be an insult to poultry.

It isn't as bad as the review states but it isn't much better. I counted a couple of jokes and maybe a couple more minor chuckles. The screening I was at was reasonably well attended for a Saturday afternoon with a decent number of parents and kids though the attendance may have had more to do with the fact that all of the other kid fare films have been out for a few weeks. I would have expected more from a film with Harrelson, Wilson and Poehler in it but there you go. My gut feeling is it isn't worth it and if you are on a tight budget save your money this week, and get out a decent DVD from your collection to entertain the kids and save you money for Frozen next weekend. Probably 4 out of 10 and just a 2 star film,
