Halloween movies 2011

A selection of scary movies to catch this Halloween

It’s Halloween, so what better way to spend an evening than being spooked at the cinema? Here, Derek Adams selects five movies to freak you out…

  • 1. Paranormal Activity 3

Dirs Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman

There’s something especially chilling about young children in creepy movies and this latest instalment in Oren Peli’s ever-expanding ghost franchise milks the junior jolts for all they’re worth. Brrrrr, it’s cold in here.

  • 2. Ghostbusters

    Dir Ivan Reitman

Perhaps this big-screen re-release is a litmus test for the belated second sequel ‘Ghostbusters III’ (due in 2012) or perhaps it’s for no reason other than to give cult fans a chance to see it again. Either way, Ivan Reitman’s film will always be worth a slice of anyone’s wonga.

  • 3. Contagion

    Dir Steven Soderbergh

You won’t find any ghouls in closets, rampaging axemen or creepy spirits here, but Steven Soderbergh’s epidemic thriller looks to be every bit as chilling as anything else this Halloween. Perhaps even more so given the reality.

  • 4. Demons Never Die

    Dir Arjun Rose

Be careful what you wish for… A group of psychologically disturbed London teenagers form a suicide pact but live to regret it when a hooded, knife-wielding berserko decides to lend a hand.

  • 5. We Need To Talk About Kevin

    Dir Lynne Ramsay

Lynne Ramsay’s extraordinarily tense and impressively mounted adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s traumatic domestic thriller lances every parent’s nightmare. Tilda Swinton is especially riveting in the role of the single mum reeling from the psychological repercussions of having raised a killer son.
