5. Don’t Bother to Knock (1952)
This short, sharp psychodrama from 1952 was directed by British journeyman Roy Ward Baker, and it saw Monroe as the crazed babysitter hired by Richard Widmark and his wife Anne Bancroft. The film, which takes place almost entirely in a single New York hotel, is most notable for presenting Monroe’s range as an actor, showing that she had a sharp, subtle sting in the tail when it was required of her.
