2. Asphalt Jungle (1950)

Graduating from the chorus line (but still a relative unknown in celebrity terms), Monroe’s best early film sees her in a small but crucial supporting role in John Huston’s scintillating early noir concerning a trio of thieves planning to pull off a ‘perfect’ million dollar diamond heist. Monroe plays – surprise, surprise – the gorgeous mistress of Louis Calhern’s duplicitous lawyer, and even though her role was so minor she didn’t even get on the poster, she has enough screen time to prove she was no two-bit showgirl.
