In 1995, choreographer Matthew Bourne revitalised popular interest in ballet with his revolutionary staging of Swan Lake. Loosely based on the Russian classic with music by Tchaikovsky, Bourne replaced the traditional fluttering female corps de ballet with a sexy and menacing all-male ensemble. This filmed performance, with Richard Winsor as the lead Swan, captures the athleticism and grace of the dancers, bringing Bourne's striking vision to an even wider audience.
