Carrie Cracknell directs Terence Rattigan's devastating masterpiece set in 1950s West London, which is broadcast live from the stage of the National Theatre. Helen McCrory stars as emotionally brittle heroine Hester Collyer, who is found by her neighbours in her flat in Ladbroke Grove in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt. As Hester regains consciousness, she painfully recalls her tempestuous affair with a booze-sodden former RAF pilot and the steady breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge.
