Rufus Norris directs Rory Kinnear as the notorious Macheath in Simon Stephens' darkly comic translation of Bertolt Brecht's book and lyrics, set to Kurt Weill's score, which is broadcast live from the stage of the National Theatre. Jonathan Peachum (and his wife Celia exert a tight control over the beggars who run rampant in the capital. They are enraged when cutthroat criminal Macheath aka Mack The Knife marries their daughter Polly. The Peachums conspire to have Mack taken to the gallows.
