underplaying godfather or understanding indian psyche? the Puzo -Coppolla classic is re-made for the umpteenth time by bollywood with one excepton to the rule,it actually suceeds in showing the familial intricacies versus the world of crime and a mafia milieu in an authentic manner. Sarkar pits Amitab who plays the role of Brando in a subtle ,malicious but origonal style, and his spouse is affectively played by Supriya pathak in a totally natural act . the 2 warring sons are good too,and this is Abishek's best yet. The music is kept low with no songs and a minimal background score so the dialogues and acting can come into forefront and Varma is remarkably good in staging some brilliant action pieces ,particlarly a chase through a shantytown on foot. while this is lesser than SATYA ,COMPANY or even D, it still is a remarkably good effort and deserves praise for it's rather well sketched characters and script inspired by Godfather yet totally origonal in conception of the indian mafia, whether it is modelled on the figure of BAL THACKERAY ,a real life Maharastra public figure who is controversially regarded as both a gangster and a philanthropist is anyone's guess ,but the fact it brings real life characters to reel life screen images cannot be denied by anyone , this is one of amitabh's best role and he far exceeds his overacted BLACK caricature in this worthwhile epic story narrated in a minimalist cinematic vehicle ,which works at many levels ,both as a thriller and as a poltical commentary on the indian conundrum. The fact that India has never been governed or controlled by any administration is clear ,it can be ruled but never reined is the case with indian psyche ,they have a different philosophy just as traditional and fatalistic and the indian sub -continent is well presented in this context in this subtle movie .
