As critic Georges Perec noted, Ozu’s films are not about the extraordinary, they’re about the infraordinary – they take place in the space between events. ‘Plot bores me,’ the director once said, adding that his and co-writer Kogo Noda’s intentions were to brush content, social relevance and story logic to one side in order to make a film that leaves ‘a good aftertaste’.
