The best of South By Southwest 2010
Time Out's round-up of this year's SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas
Complementing the festival’s programme of music-related documentaries were several narrative titles featuring musicians showing off their acting chops. Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins hammed it up in rock ‘n’ roll vampire comedy ‘Suck’, but more satisfying was Jewish cowboy singer-songwriter Kinky Friedman’s turn as the coolest American president we never had in part-animated interplanetary love story ‘Mars’.
If Gilbert and George had created a comic book about the first manned mission to the red planet, it might look like this fresh and vibrant film, which also stars Mark Duplass, Don Hertzfeldt and Howe Gelb (who also wrote the soundtrack). But ‘Mars’ isn’t just visually striking, it’s also full of humour, heart and super-cute cartoon Martians.Visit the 'Mars' website
