How unusual: a documentary that makes you both snigger and think. Ängsbacka is a Swedish festival where a thousand hippies, both full-time and part-time, decamp for seven days each year to take part in sessions such as tantric-sex workshops, walking on hot coals and tree hugging. Young British filmmakers Robert Cannan and Corinna McFarlane persuaded the festival to allow them to film there in 2007 and they found seven people to follow, ranging from Ljus, a blond Swede who looks like he’s wandered off the set of ‘Lord of the Rings’, to Nick, a macho Australian traveller who appears to have mistranslated ‘Ängsbacka’ as ‘Earls Court’. The directors just avoid sneering at some of the extreme characters and events they discover and succeed in leaving you both envious and suspicious of these folk and their lack of inhibitions. It’s a funny film that imbues you with an odd feeling of Zen.
