There may be a spot of Victorian detective memorabilia dotted about, but that’s the only vaguely kitsch thing about this dashing gentleman’s club of a hotel run by Park Plaza. Selling points – and thee are many – include organic and free-range ingredients used in the restaurant, a comfortably chic bar and some stately but fairly handsome rooms (all with nice new fixtures and carpets). The look favours brown leather and beige, with pinstripe scatter cushions and gleaming, spacious bathrooms. Split-level ‘loft’ suites take advantage of the first floor’s double-height ceilings. Hotel guests can use the gym, sauna and steam room free of charge – there’s a fee for treatments.
