Pet Shop Boys – 'Elysium'
By Oliver Keens
It’s sad to contemplate, but the Pet Shop Boys really are getting on a bit. Not that it makes Neil Tennant, now approaching 60, any easier to ignore. Unlike some stars his age, he’s comfortable about his vintage but remains fascinating with it. Sounding less bombastic and more like Saint Etienne, PSB tackle death in style on ‘Leaving’ and turn the funeral of a friend into a glamorous triumph on ‘Requiem in Denim and Leopardskin’. They may be ‘Boys’ no longer, but they’re coping with it remarkably well.
