Red Snapper: Touki Bouki

Queen Elizabeth Hall , South Bank Wednesday April 24 2013 19:30
To put it simply: Red Snapper are one of the best experimental rock bands of their generation. Original members Richard Thair (drums), Ali Friends (bass) and David Ayres (guitar) are, since their reunion in 2007, joined by young tenor sax player Tom Challenger, and continue to build sinuous, sensuous dance music – equal parts dub, soundtrack, funk, jungle and scuzzy rock 'n' roll – on jazz foundations. The end results are deep, dark and irresistible. Tonight they'll be performing their new soundtrack for Djibril Diop Mambéty's 1973 film 'Touki Bouki' (or 'Journey of the Hyena'), and Red Snapper's frantic percussion and eerie atmospherics should be the perfect accompaniement to Mambéty's jump-cuts and juxtapositions.
