Last time this wildly charismatic singer played London, he did so within a stage-set of giant, moving whale ribs for a Herman Melville-inspired concept work about seafaring. This time around, ‘the Italian Tom Waits’ tackles the dramatic rebetiko tradition of Greece. On his album ‘Rebetiko Gymnastas’, Capossela applies a modern touch to these songs of migration, depravation, longing and revolt – or, as he puts it, ‘long shadows cast upon the Mediterranean, the sea of prodigy, shivers and marvel’.
Vinicio Capossela
